Championing Free Markets & Liberty at LSE

Our Values

Liberty

Our Philosophy centres on the idea of liberty. The freedom to do what is best for you and your interests so long as you do not violate the rights of others. Neither the state nor organised interests should limit your liberties, and we will fight to protect them. The freedom to organise, speak, and make your own choices are fundamental.

Capitalism

Capitalism has been the greatest modernising, liberating, and wealth producing force the human race has ever known. We believe that Creative Destruction, de-regulated markets, and Consumer Choice are imperative if we are to liberate the hundreds of millions of people who are stuck in poverty.

Individualism

Our Philosophy would be nothing if not for individualism. We believe that individuals know what is best for them and they should be free to embody their choices. For this reason, we stand up for the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals, the rights of sex workers and immigrants, and for other marginalised groups.

Progress

Our Philosophy centres on the idea of Progress. We believe that through a free and open society , limited government, and free-market capitalism, the problems of disease, oppression, poverty, climate change, and other global ailments can be ended.

Talks

We welcome economists, policymakers, academics, business leaders, entrepreneurs, journalists, and musicians alike.

Our platform hosts insightful discussions led by experts and notable individuals covering current topics of interest.

Previous speakers have included Dr Madsen Pirie (Founder of the Adam Smith Institute), Jon Entine (Genetic Literacy Project), and Emily Skarbeck (KCL) amongst many others.

Ama-Gi

Our journal has been cited in numerous academic books, journals, and papers. We seek to publish the writings of students, academics, and interested parties.

Since ceasing publication in the mid-2000s, there has been a need to speak out more against dangerous reactionary populism on the Left and the Right. We seek to fulfil that challenge.

Socials

Throughout the year, we organize a variety of socials and dinners, occasionally featuring guest speakers but always providing opportunities for members to connect. From cozy gatherings within the society to outings at various pubs, and restaurants across London, we offer chances to explore the city with like-minded members.

Opportunities

Think Tanks

Our network spans prominent Think Tanks in the UK, Washington D.C., and Europe. Many of our members and committee have secured positions across the policy landscape. Notably, our former President, Matthew Elliott, founded TaxPayersAlliance, BusinessForBritain, and BigBrotherWatch. We actively promote internship and job openings, as well as student-oriented programs

Business

Hayek Society’s engagement with capitalism, economics, policy, and history, all make rich pickings for employers. We also have an extensive alumni network who are often happy to help out in discussions about Magic Circle Law firms, accountancy, finance, and consultancy.

Academia

Our links to academic institutions across the UK and USA allows our members to experience education away from London. We are particularly close to academics at the University of Buckingham (UK) and George Mason University (USA).
